“Jouissance is impossible” is an important idea in Lacanian psychoanalysis. It can be understood as sex and romantic love are essentially just using the other person as the subject for masturbation. It implies that human is by nature lonely, and a person can never be truly connected to another (where true joy comes from). Therefore, the type of masturbation is a constant attempt to create phantasms of connecting with others in order to cope with the frustration of human being’s fatalistic loneliness. (Examples of such phantasms can include physical ones such as coition, kiss, holding hands or symbolic ones such as marriage or love oath)
